Yaw Basoah established Dark Pictures to produce bold, distinctive, and uncompromising work that explores the dark side of human nature, working across film, television, and visual art. Dark Pictures are one of Pact’s Future30, celebrating disruption, innovation, and creativity.
In recent years Yaw has been named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow, received a BFI Vision Award, graduated from the Ashridge Executive MBA for the Creative Industries as the BFI/Headstart Scholar, been named a Film London Lodestar, been involved in a number of talent development initiatives including Microwave, iFeatures, BFI Shorts and Guiding Lights, and also been selected for Breaking the Glass Ceiling, being mentored by BAFTA, Oscar and Turner Prize winning filmmaker, Sir Steve McQueen CBE.
Central to Yaw has been to collaborate with exceptional creative talent working across the audiovisual spectrum, to produce affecting cultural moments for worldwide audiences that inform, inspire, and entertain.
Recent credits include Channel 4’s first digital drama - Uzo Oleh’s BETH 2025, David Alexander’s JORDAN 2023 (BFI Short), Theresa Ikoko’s GRIME KIDS 2023 (5-Part BBC Drama series), Billy Dosanjh’s GREEN LIONS 2022 (DAZN / BBC Feature-Doc) and BAFTA nominated filmmaker Faye Gilbert’s debut, ZERO 2022 (Film London / BBC Film / BFI).
Yaw/Dark Pictures have a compelling slate of culturally significant projects at various stages, working with emerging, established, and world-renowned writers, filmmakers, musicians, and visual artists, predominantly from underrepresented backgrounds.
Away from production, Yaw is the Chair of the BAFTA Best British Short Film Jury (2025-2027), and he was a Consultant/Mentor on the producer edition of BAFTA Elevate - 2022-24. He currently sits on the boards of Reclaim the Frame and Raising Films, as well as acting as a Mentor on Screen Skills’ Film Forward programme and Consultant for the London Film School’s graduation projects. He also serves on the Pact Film Committee.
